Converting for Kindle (KDP)

Amazon's Preferred Formats

  • Word (.docx) — KDP converts automatically
  • ePub — Clean, widely compatible
  • PDF — Not recommended (formatting issues)

Best Practice for KDP

  1. Start with clean Word file

    • Use standard fonts (Times, Arial)
    • Simple formatting
    • Proper heading styles
  2. Upload directly to KDP

    • Amazon converts automatically
    • Preview in their previewer
    • Fix any issues
  3. Or convert to ePub first

    • More control over output
    • Test before uploading

Formatting Tips for Conversion

Do:

✅ Use heading styles (H1, H2, H3) ✅ Use standard fonts ✅ Keep formatting simple ✅ Use page breaks between chapters ✅ Optimize images (compress, reasonable size)

Don't:

❌ Use multiple columns ❌ Use text boxes ❌ Use fancy fonts ❌ Use headers/footers (they don't convert well) ❌ Include large images

Amazon KDP Specifics

Important Warning

Amazon has strict policies on duplicate content. Since PLR content may be used by others:

You MUST make significant edits:

  • Rewrite sections substantially
  • Add your own chapters
  • Include unique insights
  • Change structure and flow
  • Update with current information

Minimal changes (just cover/title) will likely be rejected.

  1. Go to kdp.amazon.com
  2. Create/log in to account
  3. Create new Kindle ebook
  4. Fill in book details
  5. Upload manuscript (DOCX or ePub)
  6. Upload cover (requirements specific)
  7. Preview thoroughly
  8. Set pricing
  9. Publish

Cover Requirements for Kindle

  • Minimum 1000px on shortest side
  • Ideal: 2560 x 1600 px
